Silenced voices, eternal voices: a musical journey through female composers | Saturday Classics
Beyond its spectacular collection of contemporary figurative painting, the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) programs a large number of activities and initiatives. One of them is the classical music series that it programs every Saturday afternoon.
On this occasion we will have the artists:
Namur duo
- Raquel del Pino, soprano.
- Alberto Alvarez, piano.
MUSIC BY: Liza Lehmann, Clara Schumann, Pauline Viardot, Maria Rodrigo.
In this emotional and enriching recital, the Namur duo invites us to take a unique musical journey through the works of female composers from different countries and eras. The carefully selected programme presents an exquisite and little-known repertoire that spans the song tradition in four languages: English, German, French and Spanish. The evening is dedicated to vindicating the voices of female composers whose works, often silenced by history, deserve to be rediscovered and celebrated. Through this recital, the aim is to give visibility to these female composers, whose compositions are rich in harmony, poetry and melodic beauty. The journey begins with Liza Lehmann (1862-1918), a British composer, whose songs evoke nature with texts full of poetic images. Evensong (1916) and Five Songs explore the delicacy of birds and the serenity of the night, enveloping the listener in an atmosphere of calm and reflection. Next, we explore the repertoire of the celebrated Clara Schumann (1819-1896), a highly regarded German pianist and composer. With her 6 Lieder Op. 13, Clara Schumann offers us an intimate and poetic look at love and uprooting. Songs such as Ich stand in dunklen Träumen and Lorelei are testimony to her profound understanding of the human soul and her compositional mastery. From France, we introduce Pauline Viardot (1821-1910), one of the most outstanding figures of French Romanticism. In her 6 Mélodies et une Havanaise (1880), Viardot fuses melancholy and lyricism, with songs such as La main and J'en mourrai! Morirò, where emotion and expressiveness reach their fullest plenitude. The programme ends with two works by the Spanish composer María Rodrigo (1888-1967). Ayes… is a work structured in three movements, which reflects Rodrigo's sensitivity and harmonic richness, while Viendo esta tierra de mis amores, taken from the zarzuela La romería del Rocío, connects with the essence of Spanish popular music, evoking the land and its traditions. This journey through the composers culminates with a reflection on the importance of giving visibility to these women who, with their concerns and dreams, created music that has endured throughout the centuries. The Namur duo has the honor of presenting this program as an opportunity to bring the public closer to a repertoire of extraordinary beauty, whose voices, although silenced for a long time, continue to vibrate with strength and relevance today. This recital, entitled "Silenced Voices, Eternal Voices: A Musical Journey Through Female Composers" is an invitation to rediscover the legacy of the great female composers of history.
